it's kind of like a lollapalooza of politics. i will take president obama at face value. he is thanking hillary clinton. she's not just any secretary of state. she's high profile. but, yeah, there's probably some four-letter words being uttered from joe biden's residence last night. >> maybe so. let's talk about hillary clinton's tenure as secretary of state. steve craw from "60 minutes" pressed hillary clinton about her tenure, and she wasn't able to point out any huge, giant policy changes, l.z. >> no. but you know what, to be quite honest, i really can't think of any policy change that's come from a secretary of state in the last few. i don't think it's as high profile of a position to the american people as it is to those within this junket of politics and those who cover it. so it is difficult to really pinpoint one significant thing she has done or her predecessors. with that being said, though, i will give her credit for an amazing speech that she delivered equating the rights of lesbian, gay, transgender people with human rights. when she delivered that speech, it

and the morning you see the obama administration interested in action rather than politics, you're going to have a different kind of tone. but we also should be looking at two things. what are the psychiatric problems and to what degree does the federal privacy law make it almost impossible to identify people who have psychological problems? i suspect we're going to find this tragic situation in alabama right this minute involves somebody with a deep psychological problem. and then, second, i think we have to look at, what is happening in big cities, where it is, in fact, largely pistols that are involved, and largely gangs that are involved? >> let me ask you about another big issue that we've been talking about a lot this week, the issue of immigration. there's been a big bipartisan push, you know, this week, including republicans, marco rubio, john mccain, talking about this comprehensive immigration reform. but, clearly, not all republicans are on board with this latest push. listen here to senator david vitter. >> i love and respect marco. i think he's just amazingly naive on this i

all of this a day before president obama is set to lay out his plan on immigration proposal in nevada. here to talk about it is gloria borger, and cornell belcher, and political contributor and republican consultant margaret hoover. gloria, let me start with you. what is so different this time around for the republicans? simply the reality of november's election? >> yeah, they are worried about their own survival as a political party. one way to survive as a party is to broaden your base and not remain hostage to a single part of it. and i think that has been the problem for the republican party when you talk about john mccain. when john mccain was challenged from the right in 2010, when he was running for re-election to the senate, he became much more conservative on immigration policy. now i think he's sort of unshackled and he's back to the position he was in in 2005 and 2007. i mean, you know, i spent a lot of time with him on that straight talk express when he was running for the presidency in 2007. and i remember him telling me that he was stunned at the vitriolic reaction withi

that's because of the political reality. most of the country supports some kind of pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants. you saw that president obama beat mitt romney by about 3 to 1 with hispanic voters. problem is that the divides the republican party only about a third of self-i'ded republic ee self-identified republicans support it. you have to get someone like marco rubio, putting himself on the front line, a senator with real conservative tea party credentials, putting himself on the front line and saying we need do this for the country, and we need to do this for the republican party. this is somebody now who has taken to conservative talk radio, talking about what needs to be done. the key here, john, is enforcement. because the path to citizenship in the senate version of the bill is going to be contingent on enforcement. and my big question is, how do you judge -- how do you judge whether the borders are secure. that's going to be a very big question, so as the senators try and map this out. but i have to
